Frequently Asked Questions
“Success in life means living by your values.”
- Russ Harris, author of The Happiness Trap
Do I need a referral form a GP?
You do not require a referral for therapy. However, if you are seeking an assessment for Adult ADHD a referral from your GP is required. This way your GP can rule out anything phycial that might be causing your symptoms and can ensure that, if diagnosed, there are no contraindications to potential ADHD medical treatment.
Is there an age restriction for these services?
I cater to adults, those aged 18 years or older.
Am I able to attend my appointment online if I live outside of Christchurch?
Yes. It is my preference to undertake initial consultations in-person. However, I am able to be flexible about this if we deem this is necessary. Ongoing therapy sessions are able to occur online. For further information about this option please contact us.
Is parking available on site?
Yes. There are four car parks available on site. They are marked “Co-Lab Client Parking” and are free to use for the duration of your appointment.
What do I expect at my first appointment?
Initial appointments provide an opportunity to get know you and understand your experience or problem. This involves a 90 minute interview during which you will be asked about your day-to-day life, your understanding of what you are experiencing, and some information about your life history. You may also be asked to fill in some questionnaires.
What happens to the information I share?
The information you share with us is held securely with your privacy in mind and is confidential to our service. There are however some exceptions to this confidentiality:
With your consent, summary information can be provided to other health professionals involved in your care.
If we are concerned about a risk to you or anyone else’s safety, we may need to disclose information to a third party. Where possible this would be discussed with you first.
We receive clinical supervision in line with registration guidelines and requirements of the New Zealand Psychologist Board Code of Ethics. This means that where necessary, some of your information can be discussed with your clinician’s supervisor to help ensure you are getting the best care. Supervisors are also registered clinical psychologists and are subject to the same strict confidentiality agreement that you will have with your clinician.
Clinical psychologists are required to keep notes for at least 10 years. As such, we keep both paper and electronic records. Paper records are kept securely and scanned into our electronic system. Electronic information is kept in a secure cloud based system to avoid potential loss through fire or theft.
How long will my appointment take?
Initial consultation assessments are 90 minutes. Therapy sessions are 50 minutes.
Are there funding options available to cover the cost of my sessions?
Sometimes. Some clients might meet criteria for some funding though Work and Income to support the cost of their sessions. Others may have their fees paid for by a referrer, such as their employer or an insurance company. However, you will need to arrange this funding yourself. Typically insurance companies will reimburse you directly for the sessions you pay for. The exception is for client’s whose sessions are covered by ACC’s Intergrated Service for Sensiitive Claims (ISSC). Potential cover can be arranged with your clinican.
Can I bring my whānau or supports?
Yes. You are welcome to bring along whānau or supports. The Co-Lab Clinic where I am based has a welcoming waiting space where they will be comfortable and we can include them in the session as you feel appropriate.
How many sessions will I need?
Typically if after your initial consultation assessment therapy is recommended, the number and frequency of sessions will be discussed with you. Change takes effort, action, and time. The nice thing about private health is that you are in the driver’s seat. We will endeavor to come up with a plan that works for you.
